    Iliotibial Band Injection

The iliotibial band is a thick band of tissue that starts from the iliac crest of the pelvis and runs down the lateral side of the thigh, crossing the knee to attach to the top part of the shin bone or tibia. This structure plays a vital role in the stabilization of the knee as it flexes and extends. Overuse of the iliotibial band can cause pain on the outside part of the knee that is especially pronounced during running.

What is an iliotibial band injection?

There are multiple ways to treat injuries to the Iliotibial band. Minor cases can be treated with elevation, compression, and application of ice on the affected knee, paired with anti-inflammatory medication. For more serious conditions or injuries that are not responsive to conventional types of treatment, an iliotibial band injection may be required.

How is an iliotibial band injection performed?

An IV cannula will be inserted on you, and you will be sedated. Then, the local anesthetic and corticosteroid will be administered to your knee using an X-ray guided needle. You will be taken to the recovery room once the procedure is one.

What should you expect after the procedure?

After the procedure, strenuous activity is prohibited for the next 24 hours, and you are advised to rest completely. You may resume normal activities after this period. The local anesthetic will last for less than a day, while the steroids may take up to 48 hours to work. This means that there may be a window period when you may experience increased discomfort.

Is an iliotibial band injection right for you?

Iliotibial band syndrome can be a very debilitating injury depending on its severity. It may last anywhere from a few days to a few months, so proper assessment is required, particularly if you need an iliotibial band injection.
