De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is a pretty common condition. Individuals who have professions or hobbies that primarily use their hands for grasping and gripping are particularly susceptible to it.
It refers to a noted inflammation of the tendons attached to the thumb, which causes pain whenever it is moved away from the fingers. The complexity of the treatment changes as the condition progresses, which ranges from an injection of anti-inflammatory medication to the area to surgery.
The initial treatment for this condition is to immobilize the wrist and ask the patient to refrain from performing activities that trigger the condition. The application of a cold or hot compress to the affected area might also help. Symptoms would typically resolve after a few weeks.
If the condition persists or worsens, then a corticosteroid injection may be given by your doctor.
The procedure itself would only take a few minutes. Once you are in the treatment room, you would be asked to sit down and to fully spread the affected hand for the doctor to identify the proper landmarks. Once the site of injection is identified, a solution of a local anesthetic mixed with corticosteroid would be administered carefully to the area. An ultrasound is often used to visualize the inner structures of the hand to ensure that the medication is applied to the right area, to decrease the risk of complications.
Once the procedure is done, compression and application of an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes every 4 to 6 hours is advised. The doctor may also recommend the use of a wrist splint to immobilize the affected hand. The local anesthetic would only be effective for a few hours, and the steroid would take a few days to work. If symptoms fail to resolve, then another injection may be required.
