Find out more about ankle pain and how Torrance Pain Institute can help you manage your pain, improve your quality of life, and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

What is ankle pain?

The ankle is a complex network of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Due to its intricacy, the ankle is especially prone to injury.

Ankle pain refers to any pain or discomfort on the inside or outside of your ankle. Mild ankle pain can be treated at home but can take time to resolve. It is best to see a doctor if you have severe ankle pain following an injury.

What causes ankle pain?

A sprain is the most common cause of ankle pain. It is an injury to the ligaments connecting the ankle bones. It can occur when the ankle is twisted out of its normal position. Ankle pain can also be caused by a bone fracture. Several types of arthritis can also cause ankle pain.

What are the symptoms of ankle pain?

Aside from pain, you may also notice swelling and bruising on your ankle especially after an injury. You may also not be able to bear any weight on your ankle.

What is the treatment for ankle pain?

Treatment for ankle pain varies depending on the cause. Your doctor may require you to stay off your foot for a few days up to a few weeks depending on the severity of your injury. You will also be told to elevate your foot. Your doctor may also recommend the following:

  • Applying ice to your ankle
  • Wearing a compression band on your ankle to reduce swelling
  • Taking pain relievers to help with swelling and pain

An ankle joint injection may also be considered if you don’t see any improvement after following conservative methods. This treatment involves the injection of steroid medication to the ankle to relieve ankle pain. Contact Torrance Pain Institute to learn more about this treatment.
